How to Answer Tough Teacher Interview Questions Without Freezing Up
May 27, 2025
During a recent coaching session, I was working with a first-year teacher who was looking for her first teaching position. The school year had already started, and she was feeling the pressure. Her biggest fear?
“What if they ask me a tough teacher interview question I haven’t practiced? What do I say if I don’t know how to answer?”
It’s one of the most common concerns I hear—and for good reason. Teacher interview questions can feel intimidating, especially when they catch you off guard. But here’s the good news: you can learn how to respond to even the toughest questions with confidence.
Let me walk you through a simple strategy I teach my clients so they don’t freeze up when the pressure is on.
A Simple Framework for Answering Tough Teacher Interview Questions: REMI
When you're asked a question that throws you off, you don't have to panic. Instead, use this 5-step strategy I call REMI to ground yourself and respond with clarity:
1. Restate the Question
Take a moment to breathe and repeat the question in your own words. This gives you a few seconds to think while also showing the interviewer that you're engaged and intentional.
Example:
Q: “How would you handle a student who refuses to participate?”
A: “If I had a student who wasn’t participating in class, I’d first want to understand the root cause of their disengagement…”
2. Example or Explain
Give a quick example or explanation that connects to your teaching experience, coursework, or even a hypothetical if you’re new. This adds depth and makes your answer feel more personal and real.
Tip: If you haven’t experienced it yet, talk through what you would do based on what you know about best practices.
3. Mission Alignment
Connect your answer back to the school’s mission, values, or teaching philosophy. This shows that you’ve done your research and that your approach aligns with what they care about.
Example:
“…and because I know this district values student voice and engagement, I’d look for ways to build a stronger connection and help that student see the relevance in what we’re learning.”
4. It Factor
Wrap up by highlighting a quality or skill that sets you apart—something that gives your answer a personal, memorable touch. This could be your calm demeanor, creativity, flexibility, or proactive communication style.
Example:
“I’m someone who builds strong relationships with students early on, which helps me navigate these moments with empathy and consistency.”
Recap: Use REMI to Confidently Answer Any Interview Question
Here’s a quick recap of the REMI framework:
-
R – Restate the question to buy time and show clarity.
-
E – Example or Explain to give your answer substance.
-
M – Mission alignment connects your answer to the school’s values.
-
I – It Factor reminds the interviewer what makes you uniquely qualified.
This structure helps you stay calm, focused, and impressive—even if the question catches you off guard.
